Why You Should Keep an Eye on Siding

Many aspects of a home contribute to its overall appearance and appeal. Among these are its rooftop, landscaping, and lawn. However, as any Orange County Roofer will tell you, there’s another equally important residential element in the mix. That element is siding. That’s right. When it comes to adding visual appeal to your home, siding has a considerable influence.

But the contribution doesn’t stop there. In addition to aesthetic value, siding offers important functionality. The function, of course, is to keep rainwater and other forms of moisture from entering your home.

As with many other exterior parts of your home, siding must face a barrage of harsh elements such as wind, sunlight, and rain. All these meteorological phenomena can and undoubtedly will do what they do to all other exterior residential features – inflict a certain amount of wear and tear. How much depends on community conditions. Some neighborhoods deliver harsher treatment than others. But all will experience some level of harshness. Which means siding eventually will deteriorate.

When wear and tear is extreme enough, homeowners will notice two negative results. First, aesthetic appeal will dimmish since siding wear and tear generally is visible to all but the most oblivious passersby. Second, your home will be vulnerable to dreaded water intrusion in the form of leaks.

Particularly at risk is any siding located near windows, doors, and corner moldings. When these wear out, get the buckets ready. Also, get yourself ready to make a phone call or two -- you’ll be needing the assistance of a qualified Orange County Roofing Company to set things right.

Fortunately, homeowners can minimize the risk of siding deterioration by conducting, you guessed it, a simple inspection of relevant residential features. The first element to examine is caulk. Make no mistake about it. Time is seldom kind to caulk. In fact, it’s typically brutal. What you’ll want to look for are cracks and/or any evidence of loosening material. Both issues will create ideal conditions for water leakage. If you notice these warning signs, wander into the garage (or zoom to the nearest hardware store), grab a quantity of caulk, and apply to the affected areas. Choose a day that’s warm and dry, with a minimum 65-degree temperature. Caulk clings best in these conditions.

Homeowners also should keep an eye open for siding that’s cracked or chipped, another common indicator of excessive wear and tear. With wood siding, you also may notice peeling paint. It doesn’t matter what type of tree provided the material. Pine, cedar, fir – they’ll all peel if conditions are right.

Surprisingly, not even brick siding can escape the hard knocks of brutal weather. When brick deteriorates, you’ll notice crumbling mortar joints. In that case, repairs will be needed.

Can homeowners counteract the ravages of weather and extend siding performance? Absolutely. The best course of action, according to virtually every Orange County Roofer, is to clean all siding thoroughly. All that’s needed is a scrub brush, a bucket of warm, soapy water, and a willingness to invest some time for a good cause.
